that almost any time I am not happy, when I look back on it, an underlying reason is that I was taking myself too seriously.

for the approximately 2 years I spent in the west African country of Senegal.  I worked there about 6 or 7 times, usually 3 or 4 months at a time.  I worked in Dakar, the capital which is populated by about 2 million.  The people there are wonderful and I made many friends there.  Ironically, it's also the only time and place I've ever been mugged.  That was my fault because I walked into an area of town at night that I should not have been.  I knew better.  But I thought I was invincible.  Just like I thought my alcoholism was under control.  hmmmmmmmmmmm...
