Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on world conquest.

Cinco de Mayo's history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. With this war, Mexico entered a period of national crisis during the 1850's. Years of not only fighting the Americans but also a Civil War, had left Mexico devastated and bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for a brief period of two years, with the promise that after this period, payments would resume.

The English, Spanish and French refused to allow president Juarez to do this, and instead decided to invade Mexico and get payments by whatever means necessary. The Spanish and English eventually withdrew, but the French refused to leave. Their intention was to create an Empire in Mexico under Napoleon III. Some have argued that the true French occupation was a response to growing American power and to the Monroe Doctrine (America for the Americans). Napoleon III believed that if the United States was allowed to prosper indescriminantly, it would eventually become a power in and of itself.

In 1862, the French army began its advance. Under General Ignacio Zaragoza, 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French army in what came to be known as the "Batalla de Puebla" on the fifth of May.

todAAy i AAm grAAteful & thAAnkful

for a first step meeting yesterday when I am always reminded of my unmanageability during my drinking years

that I have been asked to lead an AA Beginner's meeting tonight

that a friend celebrated her 20th year of continuous sobriety at her home Friday night with a little party. Scott W. and I both attended, each with our 5 years of sobriety. A notepad was passed around and each attendee was asked to list their own number of years of being sober. The total was 502 years. Amazing.

for the years of entertainment and humor given us by Bea Arthur. In fact, I still watch Golden Girls often, several times each week. It's as fresh as if it were filmed yesterday.

for a really fun outing to see the Astros (again) yesterday and they won again! We had great seats, just 10 rows from the field behind 3rd base, courtesy of a friend who could not attend.

~~ As I was walking along I noticed that one or two leaves had fallen from the trees. This may have been due to the slight breeze that was blowing. I left the leaves where they were on the ground and carried on walking.

A Foot and Some Steps

I've seen this before, but I guess I conveniently forgot about it. Someone emailed it to me the other day.

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?
You have to try this please, it takes 2 seconds. I could not believe this!!! It is from an orthopaedic surgeon............ This will boggle your mind and you will keep you trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!

1. Without anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.

I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it!
You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

I need a title

Two men, one American and an Indian were sitting in a bar drinking shot after shot.

The Indian man said to the American, “You know my parents are forcing me to get married to this so called homely girl from a village whom I haven’t even met once.’
We call this arranged marriage. I don’t want to marry a woman whom I don’t know or love.
I told them that openly and now have a hell lot of family problems.”

The American said, “Talking about love marriages... I’ll tell you my story.”

I married a widow whom I deeply loved and dated for 3 years.. “After a couple of years, my father fell in love with my step-daughter and married her, so my father became my son-in-law and I became my father’s father-in-law.”

Legally now my daughter is my mother and my wife my grandmother.

More problems occurred when I had a son. My son is my father’s brother and so he is my uncle.

Situations turned worse when my father had a son. Now my father’s son, my brother is my grandson.

Ultimately, I have become my own grand father and I am my own grandson.

Procrastination

copied from an email someone sent me ...

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister/friend (etc.) and said, 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?' She would gas up and stammer, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain...'

And my personal favorite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect! We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college. Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.' When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord. My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream.. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-Decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day.

Do something you WANT to......not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say?

And why are you waiting?

for Steve's post yesterday. It inspires me to write this ... As you may know, I am and always have been a car enthusiast. When I was young (probably about 6 or 7) my dad promised me that we'd build a go-kart racer. It would have a lawn mower engine on it and I could drive it on the street around the house. By the time I was 10 or 11, that promise had not been realised, but I was still waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Finally, I got my driver's license at 16 and it didn't seem so important. But for those 10 years, I asked my dad to "please, let's build that go-kart" and the answer was always "soon, son, we'll do it soon."
I never forgave him for that disappointment until I worked the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous at the age of 49.

Best friends

Four friends, who hadn't seen each other in 30 years, reunited at a party.
After several drinks, one of the men had to use the rest room. Those who remained talked about their kids.

The first guy said, 'My son is my pride and joy. He started working at a successful company at the bottom of the barrel. He studied Economics and Business Administration and soon began to climb the corporate ladder and now he's the president of the company. He became so rich that he gave his best friend a top of the line Mercedes for his birthday.'

The second guy said, 'Darn, that's terrific! My son is also my pride and joy. He started working for a big airline, then went to flight school to become a pilot. Eventually he became a partner in the company, where he owns the majority of its assets. He's so rich that he gave his best friend a brand new jet for his birthday.'

The third man said: 'Well, that's terrific! My son studied in the best universities and became an engineer. Then he started his own construction company and is now a multimillionaire. He also gave away something very nice and expensive to his best friend for his birthday: A 30,000 square foot mansion.'

The three friends congratulated each other just as the fourth returned from the restroom and asked: 'What are all the congratulations for?' One of the three said: 'We were talking about the pride we feel for the successes of our sons. What about your son?'

The fourth man replied: 'My son is gay and makes a living dancing as a stripper at a nightclub.' The three friends said: 'What a shame... what a disappointment.' The fourth man replied: 'No, I'm not ashamed. He's my son and I love him. And he hasn't done too bad either. His birthday was two weeks ago, and he received a beautiful 30,000 square foot mansion, a brand new jet and a top of the line Mercedes from his three boyfriends.'

for all the things I'm lucky enough NOT to have ... from a hangover today and poor health to being alone and living under a bridge

that we're all in this together

for gorgeous weekend weather

789 Chevy

1957, 1958 & 1959 all rolled into one!
This little Chevy is just too cool!
This car was built by N2A motors (No Two Alike). Cost $40,000 over cost of new Corvette C6 (MSRP $44,000).
Unbelievable!
The company is planning a production run of about 100 vehicles. It sits on a Corvette C6 chassis, front styled like a 57 Chevy, side like a 58, rear like a 59. Hence the designation "789".

a video AND a joke

BONUS JOKE ...

My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, "Do you want to have sex?"

"No," she answered.
I then said, "Is that your final answer?"
She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes."
So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."
And that's when the fight started....

for a statement from a friend yesterday at the noon AA meeting ... He was commenting on being arrested last weekend for an outstanding warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket.
He said that the ticket was a consequence of his drinking. The fact that it was unpaid (after 2 years) is a consequence of his alcoholism. BRILLIANT!!

Easy Does It

A friend sent me this suggestion ...

PATRIOTIC RETIREMENT
There's about 40 million people over 50 in the work force.
Pay them $1 million apiece severance with stipulations.
They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings -- Unemployment fixed.
They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered -- Auto Industry fixed. They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -- Housing Crisis fixed.

todAAy i AAm grAAteful & thAAnkful

for a meeting about EASY DOES IT

for reminders of my faulty thinking -- basically, I am wired differently than most people and I accept this

that I have been relieved of solving the world's problems and I no longer am responsible for everything that goes wrong. WHEW!!

Friday morning

todAAy i AAm grAAteful & thAAnkful

for a sober Thursday in which I went to meetings where Step 11 was read from the Twelve & Twelve and then discussed

that two of my sponsees are on Step 4 but neither are making much progress (yet)

that I am really gonna try to be my best today (this includes being [more] careful about the words that roll off my tongue)

that 6 of us will join together and make a hospital visit this morning for a mutual friend who needs an AA meeting

that today is Boston's belly-button birthday - drop by and wish her well!

todAAy i AAm grAAteful & thAAnkful

Crabs

Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. It is known for its ability to crack coconuts with its strong pincers in order to eat the contents. It is sometimes called the robber crab because some coconut crabs are rumored to steal shiny items such as pots and silverware from houses and tents. The second photo gives you a good idea of how large these crabs are - a coconut crab is seeking food from a black trashcan.

The coconut crab is a large edible land crab related to the hermit crab, and are found in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans . They eat coconuts for a living! How would you like to be on an island and come across a crab that is more than 3 feet from head to tail and weighs up to 40 pounds, with a pair of large pincers strong enough to open coconuts! They can climb trees too, but they only eat coconuts that have already fallen to the ground.

todAAy i AAm grAAteful & thAAnkful

no more blackouts and the embarrassment that went with them

that I remind myself every morning to be more compassionate and patient than I was yesterday

Is your dog this smart?

Many of us are quite confused about how we should present ourselves. We are unsure about the kind of image we are projecting and whether or not we are correct as we try to conform to current fashions. Despite what you may have seen on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together ...
And should be avoided:

1. A nose ring and bifocals
2. Spiked hair and bald spots
3. A pierced tongue and dentures
4. Miniskirts and support hose
5. Ankle bracelets and corn pads
6. Speedo's and cellulite
7. A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar
8. Unbuttoned disco shirts and a heart monitor
9. Midriff shirts and a midriff bulge
10. Bikinis and liver spots
11. Short shorts and varicose veins
12. Inline skates and a walker

And last, but not least...

13. Thongs and Depends
