ring a bell?

Update at 7:05am CST...........

Ron Claiborne of ABC News/GMA Weekend just reported that the massive storm (the remnants of Hurricane Ida) has "killed nearly 6 people" so far.

This non-understanding of the English language is so damn typical of journalism these days.

As you may notice, this is one of my pet peeves.

Gee, that is killing nearly one over here. But thankfully, not totally killing me.

I suppose number 6 is dying too slowly to make the statistics. We used to have news reports here in South Africa that listed figures for those murdered, assaulted and 'raped but not injured'. Meaning that the rapist hadn't broken the victim's leg.

I find journalistic euphemisms very intriguing.

Clean up the media, give us five years and you would have a different world.

Ouch! Aren't you grateful to be sober without bruises from unknown causes today! Poor guys probably don't even remember their arrests.

Those are side busters. I laugh like it's the first time I've seen them. I don't remember ever having done any of those, I don't remember ever having done any of those. That's the problem, I don't remember.

Yes, it is a peeve of mine--maybe not a pet one but something that I find annoying. Not only do many not know how to speak English correctly but they can't write it well either. And that includes many graduate students that I encounter.

I'll never forget my econ professor, he made us all go out and get copies of Strunk and White. It's a neat little book.

Say, Scott W has nearly six years of continuous sobriety!
Coincidence???
