One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.

I was in my temporary office in London. I was between assignments and preparing to go to Mauritania (NW Africa), a very muslim country.
After the confusion of the day or two after the attacks, my bosses allowed me to go to Senegal instead of Mauritania. I had many years experience working in Senegal and had numerous (drinking) friends there. I convinced my boss I'd feel safe working in Dakar for the next few months. (It was one of my favorite places to drink) LOL

I was in my little townhouse down the road. Had been to the football game the night before and turned on the TV to see how Ed McCaffery's leg was.... and the rest was history. But I stayed sober.

My husband and I were here at home, having returned a day earlier from an AA retreat (Fellowship by the Lake in Greenbo, KY). We weren't watching television when it happened; my daughter called first, then my son. After that, it was non-stop television for the next several days. I didn't sleep well and would get up and just watch the horror hour after hour. I remember my husband going to get some cash at the bank, but other than that I don't think we left the house.

My most vivid recollection is of the utter silence because all the planes were grounded. To be outdoors and not hear a plane, or see a contrail, was eery and unsettling.

I was sitting in the waiting room at the psychiatric institute where my mother was getting an ECT for depression that morning. One of the nurses came out to tell me that a plane had hit the WTC. She turned on the TV. I watched the insanity all around. Later, I wept because of what we do to each other.

Rehearsal with a 'cello player for a concert stopped. Neither of us believed what we'd seen.

Drinking did not enter my head--not an option. (I did consider suicide--Gave blood instead!)

I was working on 5th Ave here in the city. I heard about the first plane on the radio and went down to the street to watch, i saw the smoking tower and then the second plane hit. I ran back upstairs and waited it out with my co-workers until later in the day when we walked home.

I drank a lot back then, and this was more of the darkness I craved.
